The Fifty Best Aquavit Tasting

 

The Tasting:
The Fifty Best held a "blind" tasting of aquavit with fourteen members of our spirits judging panel. Strict tasting rules were applied. The order of service was established beforehand by lottery. Each of the aquavits were poured into fresh glasses from new sealed bottles, and served at slightly above room temperature. Only ice water, neutral unsalted crackers and chips were available to cleanse the palate.

The judges wrote down their impressions of each product on score sheets. The scoring was done on a 5-point system, with 5 as the highest. Double-Gold and Gold are awarded according to a set range of final point scores received from the judges. There were no Silver or Bronze medals awarded for this tasting.

The tasting notes that follow are summaries of the judges’ opinions, with all replicated commentary eliminated. The distilleries, states/countries of origin, and alcohol proofs are identified for each brand.

Nose: Lime, lime spritz, lemon, orange, grapefruit, citrus, elderberry, cucumber, juniper, rose oil, fennel, anise, dill, pickles, coriander, sharp caraway, light rye, smoky, cedar wood, gin.

Palate: Lime, citrus, cucumber, rose, lilac, violets, floral, fennel, anise, dill, cilantro, coriander, cumin, caraway, earthy.

Finish: Lime, lemon/lime, citrus, aromatic citrus, spicy grapefruit, cucumbers, juniper, gin, very floral, cilantro, homemade pickles, anise, menthol, grain, rye, white pepper, spicy, pleasant.

Nose: Lemon, orange, grapefruit, plums, dill seed, dill, rye, caraway, fennel fronds, anise, licorice, black licorice, mint, wet pine, aromatic.

Palate: Caraway, crushed caraway, rye bread, rye, dill, fennel, anise, licorice, Good & Plenty, citrus, citrus peel, cumin, thyme, cardamom, tea, smoky, crisp, rich.

Finish: Lime, lemon, grapefruit zest, herbal, grassy, mint, dill, anise, licorice, rye bread, rye, spice, smoky, bright, easy, approachable.

Nose: Lemon, lime, apricots, sweet banana, honey, creamy, vanilla, orange blossom, herbal, eucalyptus, menthol, fennel, anise, caraway, baking spices, woody, oak, delicate.

Palate: Lime, lemon, apricots, vanilla, chocolate, citrus, floral, herbal, eucalyptus, minty, menthol, anise, licorice, caraway, clove, nutmeg, walnut, cedar, oak, well balanced, interesting.

Finish: Licorice, licorice candy, spicy licorice, anise, fennel, floral, pear, citrus, clove, cedar, balanced flavors, silky, intriguing, perfect.

Nose: Lemon, fresh lemons, lemon/lime, citrus, elderflower, violets, lightly floral, anise, rye, grain, earthy, mineral, clean, fresh.

Palate: Lemon, lemon peel, citrus, grape, apricot, red currant, honey, honeysuckle, jasmine, orange flowers, floral, lemongrass, mint, anise, dill, green pepper, caraway, spice, clean, refreshing.

Finish: Citrus from start to finish, lime, tangerine, grapes, caraway, mint, menthol, clean, crisp, nice & smooth, delightful.
